Business Communication


A--ABOUT THE COURSE DESCRIPTION

Communication, whatever method used, needs to inform. In the business environment writing clear, concise, comprehensible copy is critical to success. In this course, learn techniques for clarifying purpose, understanding readers, and organizing ideas. Through in-class writing exercises, you practice proven strategies for overcoming writer's block and creating concise, appropriate, and grammatically correct work. Practice exercises include editing and writing letters, memos, reports, email messages, summaries, resumes, and cover letters. Vocabulary development, using correct grammar and punctuation, techniques for reducing writing time, and proofreading also are addressed. This course will run for 3 hours every week for a total of 45 hours within 15 weeks.

B--ABOUT THE COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aims of the course is to:

=>  Identify and explain five main communication delivery models. Provide references/sources where required.

=>  Correctly describe seven barriers to communication, by correctly analyzing commerce documents

=>  Describe in detail the four stages in the writing process. Provide references/sources where required

=> Correctly outline the major prewriting strategies. Provide references/sources where required

=> Accurately describe the process of assessing the reader’s needs. Provide references/sources where required

=> Explain three defined reasons for placing the main point at the beginning of most business documents. Provide references/sources where required.

=> Correctly describe a situation in which the main point of a document should not appear at the beginning. Support and justify your point.

C--LEARNING OUTCOMES

After learning this course, students will be able to:

=> Develop an awareness of the need for correct expression and professionalism in oral and written business communication.

=> Understand the technologies commonly used in today’s digital workplace.

=> Develop techniques for improving listening, nonverbal, and cross-cultural skills.

=> Evaluate business messages to determine strengths and weaknesses.

=> Apply a three-stage writing process to solve business communication problems.

=> Use informal and formal research techniques to gather information.

=> Write sentences and paragraphs that link ideas to build coherence.

=> Apply effective writing and formatting techniques to the composition of e-mail messages, interoffice memos, routine letters, goodwill messages, persuasive messages, negative messages, informal reports, proposals, and formal reports

=> Practice effective techniques for creating, presenting, and following up oral presentations.
