CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL READING
1. Why CMU has established
course-level learning outcomes?
ü From
academic principles, students will perform better and learn more effectively
when they have developed their understanding of their expected learning
outcomes of the course they are to attend. The outcome-based course syllabus
will not only inform students of learning topics, but also of new knowledge and
ability to perform their tasks as a result of their course and activities to be
completed in the class and outside class. With outcome-based course syllabus,
students will be able to achieve a deeper level of learning, understanding and
cognition,
ü As
expected in the outcome-based course syllabus, students will develop better
understanding of what they expect to learn from the course and they will gain
better understanding of the entire curriculum of the program,
ü Course-level
learning outcomes can aid instructors in designing a course by helping them to
plan course contents in a result-oriented manner, appropriate assessments, and
more participatory strategies of teaching and learning activities,
ü Course-level
learning outcomes help students understand their own learning and build
metacognitive skills. Students can also better articulate what they’ve learned
to parents, employers and others.
2. What is the difference between
student learning outcomes and the goal or objectives of a program or a course?
The
difference between student learning outcomes and goals at course or program
level is characterized by their broadness and specification or by measurability
and non-measurability or by deliverability or non-deliverability. Program or
course goals reflect broader and non-specific categories of learning and are
not measurable and deliverable. Students’ achievement at the program goals is
nearly impossible to assess. In order to assess the achievement of student
learning, the program goal must be broken down into smaller parts or more
measurable parts or more deliverable parts. The broken parts are student
learning outcomes. So learning outcomes will be used by faculty and CMU
academic team as an essential tool to gather evidence of learning achievement
of students and performance of faculty.
3. What is student learning outcome?
Students
learning outcomes are classified into four levels or categories namely 1)
knowledge, 2) skills, 3) attitudes or values, and 4) behaviors. Student
learning outcomes describe what students should know, be able to do, and value
by the end of their educational courses. Learning outcomes are clearly stated
and presented in detailed course syllabus of every subject at CMU. At CMU,
student learning outcomes are identified and defined as below:
ü At
knowledge level, students are expected to develop new knowledge
and to grasp fundamental cognitive contents, core concepts or questions, basic
principles of inquiry, a broad history, and/or varied disciplinary
techniques,
ü At
skills level, students are expected to be equipped with skills
to be applied in their future workplace and life and this will focus on capacity
for applying basic knowledge, analyzing and synthesizing information, assessing
the values of information, communicating information effectively, and ensuring
constructive social collaboration,
ü At
attitudes and values level, students are expected to shape their attitudes
and values to be applied in workplace and life and guided towards encompassing
affective states, personal, professional and social values, and ethical
principles,
ü At
behavioral level, students are critically expected to change their
behaviors in response to employment and social needs. Behavioral outcomes
reflect a manifestation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes as evidenced by
performance.
