ASEAN Politics and Economy

COURSE DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE

The ASEAN Politics and Economy, HU118, is one of the Foundation courses for all Faculties at Cambodian Mekong University. It is an introductory course to politics and economy in ASEAN which aim at providing students with an overview of the region including the historical, political and economic geography, ASEAN Integration and Policies, Skills and Labour Trends in the region, Challenges for ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), and The Business Dispute Settlement System in the region. In addition, the political and economic development, key challenging issues, the reforms, and political and economic progress of the ASEAN countries will be discovered through students' research project and class presentation. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES S

This course aims at: 

• Familiarizing students of Southeast Asia region in term of political and economic geography, the emergence and establishment as well as development of ASEAN.
• Discussing the roles and functions of ASEAN, impact on ASEAN of regional politics and economy, as well as regional skills and labour trends.
• Discussing the progress, challenges, and prospects of regional economic integration.
• Enhancing the students' knowledge in areas of regional dispute settlement system, particularly business-related issues. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

A. Knowledge

1. Have the interconnected systematic wide knowledge in one's study field and theories and the involving principles.

• Gain conceptual and empirical understanding of the dynamic process of the Southeast Asian Politics and Economy

 2. Understand knowledge and theories connected with education and professions for professional education programs.

• Achieve contextual and theoretical understanding of emerging issues in Southeast Asian Politics and Economy 

 3. Understand the last important progress of special skills in one’s study field including analyzing knowledge of researches at present involving the resolutions which happen and the improvement of knowledge.

• Locate Southeast Asian politics and economy within the global context and to view comparatively with other regions of the world. 

B. Cognitive Skills 

1. Can observe, understand, and evaluate the information, ideas, and new evidences from various sources and supposing on the events and the problems happening with the requirement of some introduction.

• Acquire necessary thinking skills towards the regional political, economic, social, and cultural differences which may impact business, work, and living manners in case the students wish to live and work in any of the ASEAN countries.

2. Can observe the complicated problems, consult, and create the new resolutions by using knowledge and experiences in one’s skill.

• Solve business and working problems base on mutual and regional understanding, owing to the principle of “one identity, one destiny”

3. Can carry those skills and knowledge to use in professions and general education involving the study of one’s skill. Whereas professional education, students can use the general appropriate procedures, but they have to clearly define the situation that needs the creation of new resolutions. All of these need response and are created theoretically and practically.

• Achieve effective self-development through ethical implication which rooted from the understanding of the value of diversity within the ASEAN Region.

C. Interpersonal Skills and Responsibilities  

1. Participating within own group discussion on problem solving as the group leader or follower.

2. Working under leadership process in real situation to embrace the new solution.

3. Identifying clear problems carefully and enable to deal those problems as the colleagues or team members.

4. Being highly responsible for academic success and work smartly to improve effective study skills and get new information to fulfill any academic requirement.

5. Being self-study and further education.

6. Working as a team and improve interpersonal skills due to the suitable condition.

7. Solve problems with highly morality and ethic without offending the other people.

D. Numerical Analysis, Communication and Information Technology Skills     

1. Enabling to use effective technology and communication skill in collecting, explaining, and spreading the information and ideas.

2. Using arithmetic strategy and statistic in interpreting the data and making solutions on current problems.

3. Making communication more effectively in both speaking and writing and making presentation

E. Morals and Ethics 

1. Develop courteous manners towards others

2. Value honesty and personal responsibility

3. Students are expected to shape their attitudes and values to be applied in workplace and life and guided towards encompassing affective states, personal, professional and social values, and ethical principles.

4. Students are critically expected to change their behaviors in response to employment and social needs. Behavioral outcomes reflect a manifestation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes as evidenced by performance.
